Respected Jyoti Basu lived for 95 years. Out of that almost around six decades in active politics and nearly two and half decades as the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

During this period his significant contribution for the socio-economic progress of West Bengal may best be kept confined to just couple of landmark decisions. The first being large scale agricultural land reform and the other is ushering in 'Panchayati Raj' in the state.

Unfortunately he did precious little for creating robust education and healthcare infrastructures in the state, which are so basic ingredients for the progress of any society. Neither did he do anything much to create large number of jobs within the state through various industrialization policy measures

Encouraging 'Cholbena...Cholbena (Won't allow...won't allow ?) culture in almost all work related activities of the state, from academic and helthcare institutions to all government offices , especially, in the corporate environment, he almost compelled many major corporate houses to shift their headquarters outside the state or to become sick... and made the government offices insensitive to public requirements with minimal work productivity.

Current young generation of West Bengal has become the primary victim of the wrong doings of the erstwhile Jyoti Babu administration. They now have absolutely inadequate employment opportunities, poor educational and healthcare facilities. The 'Frankenstein' that Jyoti Basu had created is still creating its havoc through 'Nandigram' and 'Singur' like sagas.

Be it Buddha Babu or Mamata didi, they all are keen to win the intoxicating political power game by using the common man just as the pawns of the game of a chase.

West Bengal needs a leader of a totally different genre to save this lovely state from the brink of a slow poisoned death. Should Jyoti Babu's political legacy be best remembered just a bad dream by the people of West Bengal or be written as a case study for the posterity to take a political lesson out of it?
